We all know or should have heard about the stir that Garreth Cliff caused over social media with his views on the Sparrow situation. But nobody knew that it would cause such a media up raw and make headlines in the news!

Although Freedom of expression exists and some people may agree with what Garreth did and said others felt like what Garreth had said was offside and had nothing to do with freedom of expression. His comment was seen as rude, disrespectful ad left people calling him a racist. This situation left Garreth Cliff faced with a court case and his job on the line.

After going through and fighting a court case to secure his job and justify his actions, Garreth Cliff won the case and walked away with a big smile on his face.

This is a good example for people to learn from and know how to use freedom of expression wisely. Even if their are many different platforms for us to share our views and opinions one must remember to not say anything that intentionally will harm another's feelings and reputation.


4 Main Guidelines To Keep In Mind When Using Freedom Of Expression:

1. Freedom of opinion and expression are fundamental rights of every human being. Indispensable for individual dignity and fulfilment, they also constitute essential foundations for democracy, rule of law, peace, stability, sustainable inclusive development and participation in public affairs. States have an obligation to respect, protect and promote the rights to freedom of opinion and expression.

 2. Freedom of opinion and expression are essential for the fulfilment and enjoyment of a wide range of other human rights, including freedom of association and assembly, freedom of thought, religion or belief, the right to education, the right to take part in cultural life, the right to vote and all other political rights related to participation in public affairs. Democracy cannot exist without them.

 3. Freedom of opinion and expression are important in and of themselves for the promotion of individuals’ self-fulfilment and autonomy. Freedom of expression, including artistic expression, is essential for the development and manifestation of individuals’ identities in society.

4. Free, diverse and independent media are essential in any society to promote and protect freedom of opinion and expression and other human rights. By facilitating the free flow of information and ideas on matters of general interest, and by ensuring transparency and accountability, independent media constitute one of the cornerstones of a democratic society. Without freedom of expression and freedom of the media, an informed, active and engaged citizenry is impossible.

Ok now that I’ve caught your attention you should know that this post is not only fun but interesting as well and will probably leave you with some new knowledge. I’m sure most of you have been seeing videos of people throwing a bucket of ice water over themselves… and wondering why the heck would one be so crazy?? Well stop wondering because I am here to tell you all about it.

The whole point behind throwing a bucket of iced water over yourself and then uploading the video to the public, is to raise awareness about the ALS disease.  ASL stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It is a disease that basically attacks a person’s muscles in their body causing one to hardly be able to move and could even end up paralyzed.  Many people don’t know about the disease especially in South Africa. Therefore the ice bucket challenge was created to make people aware and educate them about ALS and raise funds to do more research on the disease and how we can help fight it.                                           

      

You will be surprised as to how many people are suffering from ALS for example a young man named Pete Frates. Pete who was an active athlete was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 27. Within two years the disease had attacked Petes muscles so badly that he is now paralyzed and unable to talk. Another famous South African that is fighting the same battle is the famous Springbok legend Joost van der Westhuizen.

Social media has definitely made the challenge more interesting and popular. One of the rules to this challenge is uploading a video of yourself taking the challenge. Therefore everyone gets to view different peoples videos and see what its all about. Uploading a video of it has certainly put the fun into doing the challenge as many people use social media as a way of communication with the world. Been able to do the challenge over social media also allows the hype and awareness around the disease to go viral, making it easier to also educate people about the disease and the concept behind the exciting challenge.

2: Simply post that very same video on any sort of social network, for example Instagram or Facebook.

3: Nominate other friends to take on the challenge within 24 hours.

All the money that is raised from the challenge will go towards the cost of a patient that is living with the disease. Money will also help with purchasing and providing them with the necessary equipment needed. For example wheel chairs and respiratory equipment.

What’s the hype about Hip Hop?

On the 28^th of January 1988 South Africa’s prince of Hip Hop, Kiernan Jordan Forbes was born also known as AKA.  From the age of 14 AKA had discovered a cool street style music which had then led him to the big dream of becoming a Hip Hop star. In 2005 AKA was part of the group called "Entity" who released the album “The Royal School Of Hip Hop”. Being part of this crew allowed AKA to broaden his dream, and show off his talent to the rest of South Africa. Although the group departed a year later, that was not the end for AKA.

He became a music producer for IV league and focused on his solo career. This career had given him many opportunities little did he know the best was yet to come.  AKA had set the Hip hop game in SA on fire in the year 2011 with his comeback solo album Altar Ego (hyperlink). The album which included singles such as victory lap had won him best male artist of the year.  He continued to chase his dream over Beastly beats, rhymes, and free words. And just when we thought he had it all. This young talented and skillful artist who is not just a hip hop artist, showed the world that he has more to offer. AKA became an ambassador of a local urban clothing line called the Head Honcho making him a trendsetter!

How did social media scoop the young artist??

Social media worked as a foundation for AKA to express himself and allow the rest of the world to take a glance into his life. AKA used Instagram to show the world what he was all about, through his pictures posts. On his account one can see how he showcases himself as a brand and what his label is bringing to us. Another way that AKA used social media is by expressing himself over twitter. On twitter we see that he is a very stern and opinionated person. Which often leaves the artist making headlines and more famous.
